Beating Charlotte's yellow pollen season, room by room
Every spring Charlotte turns chartreuse. Here is how to keep pollen from moving into your living room, and when to call in the window crew.

If you have lived in Charlotte for more than one spring, you know the moment. One morning your black car is yellow, the porch furniture is yellow, and the dog comes in looking like he rolled in curry powder. Pine and oak pollen peaks from mid-March through April, and it does not stay outside.
Where pollen hides indoors
Pollen is light enough to ride on clothing, hair and pet fur, and it settles anywhere air moves slowly. In the homes we clean each spring, we find the heaviest buildup in these places:
- Window sills and tracks, especially on south-facing windows.
- Entryway rugs and the first six feet of flooring inside each door.
- Ceiling fan blades, which fling it back into the room.
- HVAC return vents and filters.
- Pet beds and the sofa cushions pets favor.
Start at the door
The easiest pollen to clean is the pollen that never comes in. Put a coarse outdoor mat and a washable indoor mat at every entrance. Ask family members to leave shoes at the door during peak weeks. Keep a microfiber towel by the back door to wipe paws after walks. It takes ten seconds and saves hours of vacuuming.
Clean top to bottom, dry to wet
Dust ceiling fans and light fixtures first, then shelves and furniture, then floors. Use a slightly damp microfiber cloth rather than a feather duster, which only relocates pollen. Vacuum with a HEPA filter before you mop. Mopping first turns pollen into yellow paste in grout lines.
Mop after you vacuum, never before. Otherwise you are just painting the floor yellow.
Windows and screens
Screens act like pollen nets. Remove them, rinse them gently with a garden hose and let them dry in the sun before reinstalling. Wipe the tracks with a vacuum crevice tool and a damp cloth. Wait until the worst of the season has passed, usually late April, before booking a full exterior window clean, or you will be doing it twice.
Air and linens
Change your HVAC filter at the start of pollen season and again four weeks later. Wash bedding weekly in hot water and consider drying it in the dryer rather than on a line outside. If allergies are rough in your household, run an air purifier in bedrooms overnight with the door closed.
When to bring in help
A spring deep clean in late April resets the whole house after peak season: baseboards, vents, window tracks, blinds and fans all get attention. Many of our clients pair it with our window and blinds service so the glass stays clear through summer. Spring slots open in February and usually fill by the end of March, so plan ahead if you want a date before Easter.
